Winter Storm Nemo (February 8-9, 2013)

February 11th, 2013 · No Comments · Long Island

The massive nor’easter that hit the Northeast delivered about 20-25 inches of snow into the area where we live. Not as bad as other places (40 inches in Hamden, CT), but it has convincingly crippled Long Island and Suffolk County. We were lucky enough to not lose power at all, and were overall well prepared even if we did. It seemed like everyone (the town, the village, our apartment complex) waited until the storm was over to start plowing the roads. By now, the apartment complex has cleared most of the roads although parking will be a problem for a while.

Canoeing on the Peconic River (Long Island, New York)

August 8th, 2011 · 3 Comments · Adventure, Fun, Geocaching, Kayaking and Canoeing, Long Island, Personal, Photography

One advantage of living on Long Island (and for me personally, advantages of living here are very hard to come by) is the presence of large bodies of water open to kayaking and canoeing. Besides the obvious Long Island Sound and the Great Sound Bay, there are several rivers that can be explored by personal watercraft. One such river, is the Peconic on Eastern Long island. It originates near Brookhaven National Lab and lazily flows east, towards Riverhead and the crotch of Long Island and eventually empties into the Flanders Bay, which is apart of the Peconic Bay. This river has been on my list ever since I moved to Long Island but for variety of reasons (most of them bullshit excuses) never got around to it.

Bicycling On Long Island: The Great Peconic Loop

April 6th, 2011 · 6 Comments · Bicycling, Long Island, Personal, Photography, Travel

Another beautiful Sunday was ahead of us and the weather was just begging for a long ride. It seemed like it was a good time push the boundaries a bit so we opted for a ~110 mile ride, which will henceforth be known as the “The Great Peconic Loop”.

Bicycling on Long Island: Stony Brook – Sound Ave – Riverhead – Whiskey Rd – Stony Brook

March 21st, 2011 · 1 Comment · Bicycling, Long Island, Personal

The days, and the rides are finally getting longer. After last weeks 42 mile ride, we tacked on additional few and made this one a solid 58 miles (93 km) long. We met at the department at 6:15AM but postponed the departure because it was still dark, we postponed the departure until about 7AM. Oh, and it was also solid 30 degrees F outside, which to the rest of the World translates to just about -1 degrees C. Regardless of the temperature it was supposed to be a very sunny day with no clouds and abundant blue sky.

Doing Fun Things in 2011

Perhaps posting my travel/adventure plans for 2011 will make me more likely to stick to them. And maybe not. Regardless here the first three I am already registered for. More to come later.

Bicycling on Long Island: Westhampton Barrier Island

May 11th, 2010 · 5 Comments · Bicycling, Geocaching, Long Island

After last weeks inaugural ride of 2010, we headed to the Westhampton Barrier Island which lies to the south of Long island. There are several outer barrier islands lining the south shore of Long Island – Westhampton, Long Beach, Fire Island or Jones Beach. Westhampton barrier island is terminated by the Shinnecock inlet in the east and by the Moriches inlet in the west. It is not the longest of the four, but it is the only one that has an asphalt road spanning from one end to another AND is not entirely covered by obnoxious suburbia.

Geocaching in Hubbard County Park (Long Island)

September 23rd, 2009 · 3 Comments · Geocaching, Hiking, Long Island, Photography

Another geocaching “hike” on Long Island, the first one since our return from Slovakia. This time, I was joined by Richard who quite suddenly started geocaching himself. The weather was very nice, sunny but relatively cool and breezy and we even had Curie the dog with us for the day. I have geocached in the area before, in the Maple Swamp County Park to be exact. That time, we also ventured a bit into Hubbard County to pick up a few caches. There were, however, enough caches left to warrant another visit.

Geocaching on Long Island: Maple Swamp County Park

May 6th, 2009 · 1 Comment · Geocaching, Hiking, Long Island, Photography

As Francis’ visit on Long Island was coming to an end, we decided to do some geocaching on the Eastern end of Long Island. The weather reports for Saturday looked rather gloomy, but since we haven’t geocached together in a while we were determined to go rain or shine. I put together a pretty busy itinerary of almost 30 geocaches in the Maple Swamp County Park as well as in the Hubbard County Park, close to Riverhead, on the south fork of Long Island.

Bicycling on Long Island – Stony Brook to Long and Short Beach

May 1st, 2009 · 3 Comments · Bicycling, Geocaching, Long Island

Long and Short beach are located in the town of Nissequogue on the North Shore of Long Island. Both beaches seemed to be accessible by ~20-25 mile bicycle ride to the west from our homebase in Stony Brook. The weather forecast for the weekend was sunny and hot (too hot) so we decided to leave around 8 am from campus. After some minor repairs and bike maintenance we left around 8:30. The basic plan was to follow 25A to St. James and then Moriches road north to the beaches and then on the way back, to avoid busy 25A we planned to follow the coast on Harbor Road back to Stony Brook village and to campus.
