This was another one of those plans that hatched this past winter, while the snow lingered outside and I was laying on the floor in front of the TV planning future bike trips on mapmyride.com. For this particular plan, however, lot of things had to come together – and perfectly at that. First, the weather had to be decent – at least – as I was planning to ride lite (no panniers). Second, the ride had to coincide with out visit to Andi’s parents in Lunenburg, MA. And third, because the train was leaving from Boston North Station, there would have to be a good reason for someone to drop me off in Boston with my bike. In this case, Andi’s college reunion planned for the weekend worked just fine.

Unusually warm weather forecast for Tuesday (November 23, 2010) offered perhaps the last chance for a not-completely-freezing bike ride of 2010. Definitely for me as the next time we come to these parts it will be the end of December. My plan was to head west-ish out of Lunenburg to Ayer, MA where the Nashua River Rail Trail begins. After following the trail past the Massachusetts/New Hampshire border I would take side streets back towards Lunenburg. All in all about 39 miles.

We had about 10 days before flying to Slovakia for an early vacation (and preemptive honeymoon) and needed to take care of a few things in Massachusetts before the wedding. There was some dead time on Sunday morning so I decided to bring my bike along and do a long(er) ride. Long Island is a miserable place for bike riding (especially longer rides), barring those few roads on East End. Add to that drivers who feel invincible and you have an extremely unpleasant combination. Anyway. The plan was to head out around 6:30AM and be done before noon, completing about 50 miles.
